The world's highest militarised zone (5,400+ m), located in the Karakoram range, controlled by India since Operation Meghdoot (1984) following Pakistan's attempt to occupy the Saltoro Ridge.
Context & Background
Demarcation after the 1972 Simla Agreement extended the LoC only to grid reference NJ9842, leaving the area north undemarcated; India launched Operation Meghdoot to pre-empt Pakistani occupation.
