Social and Political Life – Part 1 is the Class 6 Civics NCERT, introducing the foundations of democracy, government, and everyday administration in India. These Class 6 Civics NCERT notes for UPSC build the conceptual base for Polity and Governance, from diversity and equality to local self-government and how people earn their living.

The book covers:

• Diversity and equality: understanding India's diversity, and how diversity can lead to discrimination and prejudice.
• Government and democracy: what government is, its levels and forms, and the key elements of a democratic government.
• Local self-government and administration: Panchayati Raj, and the working of rural and urban administration.
• Livelihoods: how people sustain themselves through rural and urban livelihoods.

In NCERT's rationalised 2023-24 edition the book has eight chapters: "Key Elements of a Democratic Government" was dropped, so chapters 5 to 9 here are chapters 4 to 8 there. This site keeps all nine; the dropped chapter carries a "Retained chapter" notice.
