India: People and Economy is the Class XII Part 2 NCERT in Geography, surveying India's human and economic landscape: its people and settlements, the resources, industries and infrastructure that drive the economy, and the problems that come with them. As Class 12 Geography NCERT notes for UPSC, it anchors much of the GS1 Indian geography and GS3 economy syllabus.

The notes follow the original twelve-chapter edition. The rationalised NCERT reprint (2026-27) has nine chapters: it drops Migration (ch. 2 here), Human Development (ch. 3) and Manufacturing Industries (ch. 8), which are kept on this site and marked as retained, and renumbers the rest (Human Settlements becomes ch. 2, and so on to Geographical Perspective on Selected Issues and Problems as ch. 9).

  • Where people live: rural and urban settlements (ch. 4).

Each chapter page carries detailed figures drawn from NCERT's tables and from dated official data: the Planning Commission's State HDI and NITI Aayog's poverty index, Census urbanisation and population growth, land use and cropping intensity, groundwater and irrigation, India's place in world crop and mineral output, power capacity, steel plants and industrial regions, the Indira Gandhi Canal, major ports, trade partners, and polluted rivers and urban waste.
