BharatNotes Fundamentals of Human Geography (Class XII, Part 1) is the NCERT that builds the conceptual base of human geography: how people are spread over the earth, how they live, work, move and trade, and how they shape and are shaped by their environment. As Class 12 Geography NCERT notes for UPSC, it grounds the population and economy themes that recur across Prelims and GS1 Mains.
The notes follow the original ten-chapter edition. The rationalised NCERT reprint (2026-27) has eight chapters: it drops Population Composition (ch. 3 here) and Human Settlements (ch. 10 here), which are kept on this site and marked as retained, and renumbers the rest (Human Development becomes ch. 3, and so on to International Trade as ch. 8).
What the book covers, by theme:
- Discipline and approach: the nature and scope of human geography, the determinism-possibilism debate and the stages of the discipline.
- Population: distribution, density and growth, the demographic transition and migration (ch. 2), population composition (ch. 3) and human development (ch. 4).
- Economic activities: primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary and quinary activities (ch. 5 to 7).
- Connectivity: transport and communication (ch. 8) and international trade (ch. 9).
- Where people live: rural and urban settlements (ch. 10).
Each chapter page now carries detailed figures drawn from NCERT and from dated official data: population pyramids and the demographic transition from UN data, India's Human Development Index worked out from the Human Development Report, a Census map of the child sex ratio, and charts of world trade, steel, chokepoints and cities.
For UPSC, this volume anchors GS1 (geography and society) and supports GS2 and GS3 on development, trade and infrastructure.
